ROAD TO DAMASCUS LYRICS

Mark Paul Smith

VERSE 1

It was a moonless night on a dusty trail

When I saw the light from beyond the pale

Then I heard the voice calling my name

I knew my life would never be the same

CHORUS

I was on the road to Damascus

On the road to Damascus

When I decided to surrender

On the road to you

Gave up my greed and guilt

Tore down the walls I built

VERSE 2
The dues I had to pay brought me to my knees

Taught me how to pray like a blind man sees

Then I heard the voice calling my name

I knew my life would never be the same

CHORUS

I was on the road to Damascus

On the road to Damascus

When I decided to surrender

On the road to you

Gave up my greed and guilt

Tore down the walls I built

CHORUS

I was on the road to Damascus

On the road to Damascus

When I decided to surrender

On the road to you

Took off the mask I wore

Walked out my prison door

ABOUT THE SONG

Mark Paul Smith

“The Road to Damascus” explores the idea of transformation—both spiritual and personal. It draws on the metaphor of a profound awakening, a moment when perspective shifts and a deeper understanding emerges. For me, this concept is closely tied to life experience, particularly in confronting loss and embracing gratitude.

The song reflects a belief in growth through surrender, and in using one’s gifts as a form of connection and purpose. It emphasizes that transformation is not always dramatic or external; it often happens quietly, through reflection, faith and the willingness to evolve.

The song resonates on two levels – both as a universal metaphor for enlightenment and radical personal change, and as something grounded in my Christian faith, as it’s the road where Jesus appeared to Saul and awakened something in his soul that made him Christ’s chief apostle to spread the Good News in the years before the gospels were written.
