RAINBOW RING LYRICS

Lisa McDavid | Mark Paul Smith | Danny Jones

Rainbow_website_asset.png

VERSE 1
June twenty-first, the shortest night for the moon
It was the longest day
You told your queen goodnight

then you turned to the light
Alone in the park trying not to cry
When something made me, look up to the sky

CHORUS
There was, a rainbow ring
Shining around the sun
It made my heart sing
Sing for you

VERSE 2

What’s it like Daddy, to feel the perfectness of GodI can only imagineI hear your music through the light of love

CHORUS

There was, a rainbow ring

Shining around the sun

Yes, a rainbow ring

Shining around the sun

It makes my heart sing

Sing for you, sing for you

My heart sings for you, my heart sings for you

ABOUT THE SONG

Lisa McDavid | Mark Paul Smith | Danny Jones

To me, “Rainbow Ring” is the emotional centerpiece of the album. Born from a deeply personal moment, the loss of my beloved dad, the song captures both grief and a sense of spiritual connection. The imagery I use reflects a real-life experience that felt symbolic and transcendent, offering comfort in the midst of pain.

The writing process was immediate and intuitive, allowing raw emotion to guide the structure and phrasing. Musically, the arrangement supports that intimacy, creating space for the vocal to carry the weight of the story. It is a song that bridges the personal and the universal, speaking to loss, memory and the signs that help us make sense of both.

The song came out of a moment I never could have planned. The morning he passed away, I still had a gig that afternoon, and I went onstage and performed. In the middle of the set, I looked up and saw a rainbow ring around the sun. It felt like a sign, like he was still with me. I couldn’t sleep that night, and around 3 a.m. I just started writing.

What came out the poem that became the song. I wrote, “June 21st, the shortest night for the moon” and Danny reminded me it was also the longest day of the year, which became the second line. We built from there, using that image to frame the first day of summer and everything that moment meant to me.
